I admit to being a Joni Mitchell devotee and have generally believed that she is the best performer of her songs and music as it is all so personal. Having said that the musical directors for he concert have done a terrific job with the artists who perform her songs. The arrangement are in some instances close to her originals but some are way different and add a new dimension.
None of the performances can be criticised but for me the outstanding ones are Los Lobos with their inspired and vibrant renditions of Dreamland and Nothing Can Be Done. James Taylor sings both River and Woodstock with great empathy for the lyrics and in his usual laid back style.
What comes through all the performances is the deep respect that each have for the music and person of Joni and a desire to put their own imprint on her songs.
If you are a Joni fan it is a must buy and fan or not its a unique tribute. If you enjoy the CD you should get the DVD to savour the experience of the whole concert.
