It’s not every morning you open up the BBC News website and find your own face staring back at you.
That’s exactly what happened to Mike recently, when his usual morning browse of the news came with a bit of a surprise. A photo of him and our very own Lucas sitting proudly on the BBC Gloucestershire homepage.
Badlands Records Pops Up on BBC News
The reason? Lucas had been chatting to the BBC about the continuing love affair between younger music fans and physical music.
Lucas started buying records when he was 19 and was a regular customer here at Badlands before eventually crossing over to the other side of the counter. Now 25, his collection has grown to around 250 records. Something that working in an independent record shop has done absolutely nothing to discourage.
As Lucas told the BBC, streaming is undoubtedly convenient, but buying a record supports both the artist and independent retailers in a much more substantial way. He also reckons younger listeners are increasingly conscious of that.
We’d have to agree. And seeing Badlands unexpectedly pop up alongside the morning news certainly made Mike’s cup of coffee a little more interesting.

New Releases and Reissues at Badlands
Meanwhile, the records keep coming.
Recent arrivals have included new music from Ezra Collective, Haruomi Hosono and Bonobo, plus plenty of reissues and catalogue favourites landing back on the shelves.

Brian Fallon – Not Bad for New Jersey
Also catching our eye is Brian Fallon’s Not Bad for New Jersey.
The Gaslight Anthem frontman reunites with producer Butch Walker for his first collection of original solo songs since Local Honey, with a guest list including Brandon Flowers, Lori McKenna, Phil Collen and Marc Ribot. It’s a big-hearted mix of rock, singer-songwriter storytelling and power pop and, given our well-documented New Jersey tendencies, the title alone was always going to get our attention.

Israel Nash – Sweetheart of the Rodeo
There’s also something rather special on the way from Israel Nash.
Sweetheart of the Rodeo sees Nash reimagining the landmark Byrds album through his own blend of cosmic Americana and wide-open, atmospheric country rock. It’s due for release on 25 September and is available on vinyl and CD.

Beck Listening Party at Badlands This Friday
