Joan Jett’s debut album ‘Bad Reputation’ (1981) began as a menacing thesis, facing a world that told Jett: “Girls don’t play electric guitar,” and continues to thrive 45 years later as a cultural staple.
‘Bad Reputation’ includes hits ‘Bad Reputation’, ‘You Don’t Own Me’ and ‘Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)’, guest appearances from Sex Pistols and Blondie band members, and the album reminds us that Jett’s perseverance and resolve are just as visceral and authentic as when she first told us: “A girl can do what she wants to do.”
‘Bad Reputation’ the song is a cultural anthem - the track has been featured in ads for Folgers, Jack Daniels, WWE and Nike’s Women's World Cup Soccer, plus many films, TV shows and games (‘Young Sheldon’, ‘Big Little Lies’, ‘Fortnite’, ‘Shrek’, ‘Spider-Man’), and celebrated by many other artists, including Taylor Swift, who used the track for her 2018 stadium tour.
